Story: John Smith is an ordinary human man. He works at a boys' school in rural England, teaching history, in 1913. The school matron, Joan Redfern, seems to have eyes for him, although Smith isn't quite sure how to respond. And the family maid, Martha, attends to his needs in her new position as school housemaid. The countryside is beautiful, the students - aside from a few who act out - are dedicated, and the village ball is just around the corner. His is a peaceful, fulfilling, ordinary life.
Except that he has strange dreams - about monsters, and a magical blue box, and wild fantasies that he has two hearts. Martha insists that his imaginings are nothing but fiction, but he keeps them in a diary nevertheless. Only, one day, strange things start to happen that he cannot explain. Villagers from the town act as though possessed. The scarecrows in the fields come to life. And people start to call him "Doctor" - the name of a man from his dreams. Could it be that his worst fears are true, and the life he always thought he had lived isn't really his?
