Story: While exploring the ruins of a nearby flooded village, the crew of an underwater mining base — in Scotland, 2119 — discover what appears to be a crashed spacecraft. No sooner have they brought it onboard than unexplained events begin to occur: a menacing ghostly figure appears to them, and the craft's rockets ignite without warning, killing the base commander.

Several days later, the Doctor and Clara arrive, and while exploring the silent base, they encounter two ghosts — the original, and an apparition of the base's dead commander — which pursue them with murderous intent. They find refuge with the remaining crew, huddled in the base's Faraday cage, the only place where they're safe from the ghosts during the nighttime hours. When day breaks, the Doctor immediately goes to investigate the alien ship, with its indecipherable writing on one wall, and its inexpicably missing components. What are the ghosts, and why are they trying to kill the crew? What is the mystery surrounding the alien shuttlecraft? And how is everything connected to the drowned village outside...?
