Story: Without warning, the TARDIS is catapulted out of our universe and crashlands, out of power and apparently dead. Mickey discovers that the TARDIS has actually arrived somewhere... not an empty nether realm, but a parallel version of London, where zeppelins glide through the sky and people are constantly connected to the internet via earpods. Rose notices another, more salient, difference: in this world, her father is not only still alive, but made a fortune selling Vitex health drinks. Desperate to see him, Rose takes off against the Doctor's strict instructions... and, knowing that the Doctor is much more concerned about Rose than about him, Mickey encourages the Doctor to pursue her while he investigates the city on his own.

But while the Doctor is trying to cope with Rose's emotional issues, and Mickey is confronting some issues of his own, high above the city a terrible danger is awakening. The wealthy but dying Roger Lumic has created an everlasting metal shell to house the human brain, determinedly ignoring the law and ethics for what he believes is the betterment of mankind. As he continues to kidnap undesirable human subjects for experimentation purposes, he hopes to sell the world on his ultimate upgrade: Cybermen. And if the world continues to prefer individuality, then of course there is only one solution... compulsory upgrades for all of humanity.
