Story: The Doctor brings Rose back home to see Jackie, but instead of the relaxed visit with her mother that she had been expecting, Rose finds that the Doctor has yet again landed them in the middle of trouble. An elated Jackie informs them that the ghost of her dead father has been appearing in her flat on a regular basis, and as the Doctor and Rose watch, a blurred human figure strides into Jackie's kitchen from out of thin air. Alarmed, the Doctor races outside to find that dozens of similar ghosts have materialized all along the street. According to the news reports, these ghost sightings are a worldwide phenomenon, and the Doctor suspects something sinister; for all Jackie's insistence that her ghost smells like her dear old dad, the Doctor and Rose can't smell a thing.
The Doctor rushes into action to try to trap a ghost and figure out where they're originating. When his experiment succeeds, the TARDIS takes him - along with Rose and Jackie - into the heart of Torchwood Tower, home of the secretive government Torchwood Institute. The higher-ups in Torchwood, having detected the Doctor's tampering, are ready and waiting for him... but are they friend or foe? As guardians of all the alien material left behind on Earth, they declare the Doctor's TARDIS - and indeed the Doctor himself - to be their property, and they want the Doctor's help with a mystery. In one of their rooms sits a large sphere, giving off no readings whatsoever; the Doctor tells them that it doesn't exist because it's a Void ship, capable of traversing the void between dimensions. But he doesn't have any idea what could be inside it... As a sinister force stalks the corridors of Torchwood, legions of ghosts walk the Earth, and the Void ship begins to awaken, events are set in motion for an apocalyptic showdown across the globe, and not everyone will survive...
